Holy House Elves!: Working Through the Problematic Tropes in Harry Potter

In the wake of all the recent social unrest and the pandemic and everything, I’ve had trouble thinking of topics for this blog. I don’t want to be silent on important issues, but I wasn’t sure I should dig into racism in the U.S. and/or the effects of the pandemic, since I’m a goofy white lady who hasn’t been directly affected by racism or the pandemic. However, there is one current controversy I feel semi-qualified to comment is this: J.K. Rowling being a big, transphobic Death Eater.

And Now Our Watch Has Ended: Why We Should Relax about Game of Thrones’ Finale

SPOILERS for the Game of Thrones series finale, “The Iron Throne.”

Well, after eight seasons and a whole lot of shocking deaths, Game of Thrones has ended. Naturally, the entire internet has opinions about it, and publications are flurrying to write think pieces about it. Lots of think pieces. I kind of love how the writer of the Vox GoT piece says it feels like “a slap in the face.” Really, Zack Beauchamp? You didn’t like a TV series’s finale, so it feels like the show hit you? Okay, then. That’s not melodramatic at all.

Oscar Week Post: Nothing Really Matters (TO MEEEE!!!!!)

So we’re approaching the 2019 Oscars (sorry, the 91st Academy Awards), and this is the time when various entertainment journalists post their Oscar picks. I’m not going to do that because I haven’t seen enough of the movies, and I would either choose only the safe bets or only the long shots. Instead, we’re going to talk about why and how none of this matters in the long run.

I just watched the Golden Globes and…

Things that are Big Moods right now:

  • Glenn Close’s face when she won.
  • Rami Malek’s feelings about Freddie Mercury: “I LOVE YOU, YOU BEAUTIFUL MAN!!!”
  • Both Lupita Nyong’o and Emily Blunt wearing reading glasses while presenting awards.
  • Anytime a movie that I actually saw won an award.

Also, I imagine that in the afterlife right now, Freddie Mercury is parading around in that big red furry cape and that enormous crown while David Bowie just rolls his eyes and waits for his inevitable biopic.

What I Figured Out About Movies and Popular Culture in 2018

A lot of “10 Best Films of 2018” articles are popping up in people’s social media feeds right now, and I’m not going to write one of those because every time I look at one of those lists, I think, “WOW. I didn’t see ANY of those movies.” I enjoy movies, books, and TV, but I am definitely not a cinephile. I will never be one of those people who considers movie theaters sacred ground. Theaters are all right, but I like consuming media in the comfort of my own home, too. I will also never be one of those people who feels culturally and morally superior to other people because I watch/read/listen to obscure pieces of media. I’m just someone who loves stories, some obscure and many mainstream, and I’ll watch/read/listen to anything that piques my interest.

With that said, here are a few insights I had about popular culture in 2018:

Here, have some opinions…
